Notes

Session pre-notes:

  • Aaron:
    • making a photo post with one or more post is relatively simple, it can be parsed in a reader and looks very similar to how it did originally.
    • On instagram you can have a photo/video post (combination), which works. But there's no microformats way of doing this.

Challenge:

  • no reader can display posts with multiple photos and videos and keep the order

Currently photos and videos have different u-properties, so if you post "photo, video, photo" the parser sees "photo, photo, video", so you lose the ordering. By putting them in the h-entry (no separate markup), you don't get understood as a media post in readers (e.g. Together's gallery view)

  • possible solution: go back to a single list (all photo, video, media, etc) but add mime type value

  • browses embracing image tag with video content and dealing with it differently (more or less like a gif)

Rosemary Orchard - is there something like a gallery post?

  • gallery: bunch of photos
  • photo essay: the photos are part of the story (the flow) of the entry
  • special case of Tantek Γ‡elik: inline references to images- ( Jeremy Keith this is what figure element is for - Tantek Γ‡elik disagrees)

collections are collections of posts - not just a collection of media elements

photo essay: text with formatting, headers, ... - like an article, but interspread with images, and e.g. schmarty arguing that in some cases the photos are more important.

lots of detail descussion of tanteks example post -

Marty McGuire: as tantek pointed out, the photos in my example post (https://martymcgui.re/2019/10/15/indiewebcamp-nyc-2019-photos-and-some-lessons-learned/) tell a story. a consuming case that I have is a little photo frame on my desk. it can display photos, subscribe to feeds via microsub, but can't really show text along with those photos. i would like to be able to indicate to these types of readers that while this post is an article with embedded photos, i think those photos should show up for that photo-only reader.

  • Marty McGuire also wants to consume photos from other people's posts this way! no hints required!

for mixed medie types, one suggestion

  • add* new u-media property to all photo/video/audio. this provides an order, a reader can still determine the type from the other lists. if it does not support u-media, it falls back.

Tantek Γ‡elik - there is clearly a human need to consume these posts as just looking through the images without reading the captions, there is value to people to just look at the photos

  • consuming the post, even in incomplete form (e.g. photos only) has value

Jeremy Keith - i'm interested in text-only, sometimes, and don't want or need to see the photos.

  • posts could indicate if the photos make sense on their own, the text makes sense on it's own, or it's preferred to be both for the reader - indication only

in-depth discussion about images marked up with microformats2 u-photo inside of e-content. this results in readers showing duplicate photos.

  • post type discovery says "presence of u-photo" means this post "is" a photo post
  • but it "is" an article with content being a mix of text and photos.

aaronpk shows how XRay parsing lib handles this. attempts to de-dupe photos inside of e-content by hunting for photos marked up with u-photo and removing tags that match.

  • in-depth discussion continues, suggestions of ways of marking sections up differently.
  • all photos at the top? (what if they're nested in links, figures)
  • mark up each paragraph as e-content or p-content, with u-photo interspersed? parsed mf2 can't accurately reconstruct the full post in this way.

session time ran out!
